Laminar Airflow Flow Ceiling (ATA MEDICAL)
Laminar Airflow Flow Ceiling (ATA MEDICAL)
Why Laminar
Air quality in healthcare facilities is crucial. With the presence of both immunocompromised patient and micro-organisms in hospitals, it is important to focus on the air filtration system of your facilities to avoid airborne infections. Operating room being the place where patient have the less immunity protection and the most invasive surgery, the Laminar Air Flow ceiling is a worldwide recognized solution for the safety of the patient against nosocomial infections.
Laminar Air Flow ceiling (LAF) are mandatory inside operating rooms by many standards in the world including the French one (NFS 90-351: Airborne contamination control in healthcare facilities) and the American one (ASHRAE 170-2017: ventilation of health care facilities). It’s also the best way to achieve an ISO5 environment in a room following the international standard (ISO 14-644: clean room classification)
A laminar air flow ceiling is an air diffuser installed in the false ceiling of an operating room. it is equipped with a HEPA14 Filter and connected to the Air Handling Unit. there is 2 goal for the LAF :
- Provide a clean air, free of particles and micro-organisms directly to the patient and the operating area of the OR. Hence reducing the risk of airborne infection
- Create a piston effect on the operating area. By sending clean air continuously on the entire operating area, thus avoiding any particles and micro-organisms from the rest of the room to enter inside the area under the LAF. Hence it is protecting the patient from any particles/airborne infection that are present in the rest of room.
Importance Of Air Speed
Airflow patern with too low air speed
When the speed is too low, the clean air from the LAF can’t reach the patient.
Airflow patern with good air speed
In the good speed range, the air speed is enough to reach and protect the patient and not too fast to avoid turbulence.
Airflow patern with too high air speed
Excessive airflow speed causes turbulence, carrying particles into the operating area and disrupting the LAF-ceiling border. It also stirs up contaminants by striking staff, equipment, and the floor.
Airflow
The size of the LAF can also be selected thanks to the required Air Change per Hour in the room. For
example, American standard require 20 vol/h in an operating room. thanks to the volume of the
room, this data will give you the required airflow of your AHU. Once you get this airflow you can
determine the adequate size of LAF.
ATA Medical LAF advantages
ATA Medical is providing LAF since more than 20 Years all around the world. Most of the time we
supply it along with our Hygienic AHU: CLINICAIR® but our LAF can also be connected to any kind of
AHU.
